What Is Toncoin? TON, Telegram, and the Open Network Explained

Toncoin is the native token of The Open Network, a layer-1 blockchain with deep ties to Telegram. Here is what it is, how it works, and why it has attracted attention across the crypto market.

Toncoin (TON) is the native coin of The Open Network, a layer-1 blockchain first designed by the founders of Telegram. It pays for transactions, secures the network through staking, and is the main currency for apps that run inside the Telegram messenger. The project describes itself at ton.org.

Origins and History

The project began inside Telegram as the Telegram Open Network. Nikolai Durov wrote the technical design, and in 2018 Telegram raised about $1.7 billion from private investors by selling rights to a future token called Gram. It was a private sale to large investors, not a public offering.

In October 2019 the US Securities and Exchange Commission sued to stop the token's distribution, arguing that the sale was an unregistered securities offering. A federal court sided with the SEC in March 2020. Telegram ended its involvement in May 2020. In the settlement that followed, it agreed to return more than $1.2 billion to investors and pay an $18.5 million penalty.

The code was open source, so independent developers kept the network going. That community effort became The Open Network, the coin was renamed Toncoin, and a non-profit, the TON Foundation, now supports development. Telegram later returned as a partner, not an owner. In 2023 it named TON its preferred blockchain and began building TON features into the app.

How The Open Network Works

TON uses Proof of Stake. Validators lock up Toncoin, produce blocks and earn rewards.

The design in the TON whitepaper is built around many chains working together.

  • Masterchain: the coordinating chain that stores network settings, the validator set and the latest state of all other chains.
  • Workchains: separate chains that can have their own rules. In practice, almost all activity today is on one basic workchain.
  • Shardchains: a workchain can split into shards when traffic is high and merge them again when traffic falls. This is called dynamic sharding.

Smart contracts on TON talk to each other by sending asynchronous messages. A single user action can turn into a chain of messages processed over several blocks. This helps the network scale, but it makes contracts harder to write and audit than on Ethereum, where a transaction either fully succeeds or fully fails in one step. Contracts run on the TON Virtual Machine and are written in languages such as FunC and Tact. The TON documentation covers the details.

The Telegram Connection

Telegram does not own or control the blockchain, but the two are closely tied.

  • Telegram has a built-in Wallet for holding and sending Toncoin and other assets. The default Wallet is custodial, meaning a company holds the keys for you. A self-custody option called TON Space sits beside it.
  • Mini apps, small programs that open inside a chat, can use TON for payments. In 2024, tap-to-earn games such as Notcoin and Hamster Kombat drew very large audiences this way.
  • Tether launched USDT on TON in April 2024, which made dollar transfers inside Telegram possible.

Telegram has reported more than 900 million monthly users. Only a fraction of them use the blockchain features, so user counts for the messenger should not be read as user counts for TON.

Supply and Token Uses

Toncoin has no hard cap. The network started with a supply of 5 billion coins, and new coins are created as validator rewards, which adds a small amount of inflation each year. Part of every transaction fee is burned, which offsets some of that issuance.

The original supply was handed out in an unusual way. After Telegram left, the coins sat in special smart contracts and were given to anyone who solved Proof of Work puzzles. That mining phase ended in 2022. Critics point out that a small number of early miners collected a large share.

Toncoin is used for:

  • Paying transaction fees and smart contract execution.
  • Staking, as a validator or through a nominator pool.
  • Buying names through TON DNS, which maps readable names to wallet addresses.

Network settings are changed by validator vote, not by a vote of all coin holders.

Ecosystem

Apps on TON include decentralized exchanges such as STON.fi and DeDust, the Getgems NFT marketplace, lending and liquid staking protocols, and many games. A large share of activity comes through Telegram mini apps. By most measures of developers and value held in DeFi, TON remains smaller than Ethereum or Solana.

Risks to Understand

  • Dependence on Telegram: TON's reach comes from one app. A change in Telegram's policies or legal position can hit the coin. When Telegram chief executive Pavel Durov was detained in France in August 2024, the price of Toncoin fell sharply.
  • Supply concentration: large early holders control a significant share of coins.
  • Regulation: the project's history with the SEC shows how exposed it is to securities law.
  • Custody confusion: funds in the default Telegram Wallet are held by a third party. Funds in a self-custody wallet depend on your recovery phrase.
  • Scams: fake mini apps, fake airdrops and phishing bots are common on Telegram. Never enter a recovery phrase in a chat or mini app.

A common mistake is sending Toncoin to an exchange without the required memo or tag. Many exchanges need it to credit the deposit.
