What Is Cosmos? The Internet of Blockchains Explained

Cosmos is a network of independent blockchains designed to communicate and share data with each other. This guide covers how it works, what ATOM does, and why interoperability matters.

Cosmos is an open-source project for building independent blockchains that can talk to each other. Its core idea is simple: instead of one blockchain trying to do everything, many specialized chains run side by side and exchange tokens and data through a shared standard. The project calls this the internet of blockchains. The first chain in the network, the Cosmos Hub, launched in March 2019, and its token is ATOM.

The Problem Cosmos Solves

Early blockchains operated in isolation. Bitcoin could not send data to Ethereum, and Ethereum could not read the state of another chain. Assets and information stayed inside separate systems with no standard way to move between them.

Cosmos gives developers open tools to build a chain for a single application, with its own rules and fees, and then connect that chain to others.

A Short History

Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman published the Cosmos whitepaper in 2016. A public fundraiser followed in April 2017. The Cosmos Hub produced its first block in March 2019. IBC, the protocol that connects chains, went live on the Hub in 2021. In 2023 the consensus software, long known as Tendermint Core, continued under the name CometBFT.

How Cosmos Works

The architecture has three main parts, described in the Cosmos SDK documentation.

  • CometBFT: the consensus engine, formerly Tendermint Core. It orders transactions and finalizes blocks. It is Byzantine Fault Tolerant, which means the chain keeps working correctly as long as less than one third of the voting power is faulty or dishonest.
  • Cosmos SDK: a modular framework for building application-specific blockchains. Developers pick the modules they need, such as staking, governance or token issuance, and do not have to write consensus logic from scratch.
  • IBC: the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. It lets chains send tokens and messages to each other without a central bridge operator.

How IBC Moves Assets

IBC does not rely on a trusted company holding funds in the middle. Each chain runs a light client of the other chain, a small program that verifies the other chain's block headers. Independent operators called relayers carry packets of data between the two chains, but relayers cannot forge a message, because each chain checks the proof itself.

When a token moves over IBC, it is locked on the source chain and a representation is created on the destination chain. Sending it back reverses the process. The IBC protocol site lists the chains that support the standard, which now include networks built outside the Cosmos SDK.

What ATOM Does

ATOM is the native token of the Cosmos Hub. It has three main uses.

  • Staking: holders delegate ATOM to validators that secure the Hub. Stakers earn a share of transaction fees and newly issued tokens.
  • Governance: staked ATOM carries voting power on Hub proposals, including software upgrades, parameter changes and spending from the community pool.
  • Shared security: through Interchain Security, which launched on the Hub in 2023, the Hub's validator set can also produce blocks for smaller chains that opt in, known as consumer chains.

ATOM has no fixed maximum supply. New tokens are issued to stakers, and the inflation rate adjusts based on how much of the supply is staked. In November 2023, Hub governance voted to lower the maximum inflation rate from 20% to 10%. The Cosmos Hub documentation describes staking, governance and the Hub's current features.

ATOM does not collect fees from every chain in the ecosystem. Most Cosmos SDK chains have their own token and their own validators. A growing Cosmos ecosystem does not automatically mean more demand for ATOM, and this point is often misunderstood.

The Broader Ecosystem

Many well-known projects were built with the Cosmos SDK.

  • Osmosis: a decentralized exchange that runs as its own chain and focuses on swaps between IBC tokens.
  • dYdX: a perpetuals exchange that moved from an Ethereum Layer 2 to its own Cosmos SDK chain in late 2023 to control its order book.
  • Celestia: a data availability network used by other chains to publish transaction data.
  • Injective and Sei: chains focused on trading and financial applications.

Staking Risks and Common Mistakes

  • Unbonding period: unstaking ATOM on the Hub takes 21 days. During that time the tokens earn no rewards and cannot be sold.
  • Slashing: if a validator double signs or stays offline too long, part of the stake delegated to it is destroyed. Delegators share that loss.
  • Wrong path transfers: the same token sent over different IBC routes can arrive as different, non-interchangeable versions. Check the route before sending.
  • Rewards are not profit: staking rewards are paid in newly issued ATOM. If the token price falls, the reward rate does not make up the difference.

Other Risks to Consider

Cosmos competes with other approaches to connecting chains, including Polkadot and the many bridges and Layer 2 networks around Ethereum. Each sovereign chain is only as secure as its own validator set, and smaller chains have been exploited or halted in the past.

Rule changes on the Hub are decided by token votes, so the economics of ATOM can change over time.
