What is TRON

TRON is a smart-contract blockchain founded by Justin Sun in 2017. It began as an ERC-20 token sold in an initial coin offering, launched its own mainnet in June 2018 and acquired BitTorrent the same year. Its stated mission at the start was a decentralised internet for content creators; what it actually became is the busiest network in the world for moving Tether's USDT stablecoin, especially across Asia, Latin America and Africa.

TRX is the native coin. It pays fees, is frozen to obtain the network's bandwidth and energy resources, and is staked to elect the validators that produce blocks. The live price, market cap and supply at the top of this page refresh automatically.

The TRON DAO in Switzerland stewards the network and the TRON Foundation holds the brand. Justin Sun remains the public face and the largest single influence over its direction, which is both the network's strength and its most debated feature.

How TRON works

TRON uses delegated proof of stake. TRX holders vote for 27 Super Representatives who take turns producing blocks every three seconds, plus a wider set of candidates who earn rewards for standing. The validator set is small and elections are dominated by exchanges and large holders, which keeps the chain fast and cheap at the cost of decentralisation.

Instead of paying gas for every transaction, users freeze TRX to receive bandwidth, which covers simple transfers, and energy, which covers smart contract execution. A wallet that stakes a modest amount of TRX can send USDT indefinitely without paying fees in cash, and energy can be rented from marketplaces for a few cents, which is why TRON transfers are cheaper than almost any alternative. Unfrozen transactions burn TRX instead.

The TRON Virtual Machine is compatible with Ethereum's, so Solidity contracts port over with few changes. TRC-20 is the token standard, and TRC-20 USDT is by a wide margin the largest asset on the chain, with more Tether circulating on TRON than on Ethereum for most of the past four years.

Supply and tokenomics

TRX was created with 100 billion tokens at genesis and has no hard cap in the protocol, but it has been deflationary since 2021: the fees burned by unfrozen transactions and contract calls exceed the block rewards paid to Super Representatives, so the circulating supply shrinks slowly year over year. The live figure above reflects that.

Block rewards and voting rewards go to the elected representatives and are shared with the voters who staked for them, which gives TRX holders a yield of a few percent for participating. Justin Sun and entities linked to him hold a large share of the supply, a fact that matters for governance and for sell-side risk.

History and milestones

TRON's early years were marked by aggressive marketing, a plagiarism controversy over its first white paper and the BitTorrent acquisition, which gave it a user base of over a hundred million. USDT on TRON launched in 2019 and grew into the chain's defining use case as emerging-market users adopted it for savings and remittances. The USDD stablecoin followed in 2022, and lending and swap protocols such as JustLend and SunSwap built the DeFi layer.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission sued Justin Sun and his companies in March 2023 over unregistered sales and alleged wash trading; the case was paused in 2025 as the agency changed its approach to crypto. In 2024 TRON, Tether and TRM Labs formed the T3 Financial Crime Unit, which has frozen hundreds of millions of dollars in illicit USDT. In 2025 a Nasdaq-listed company rebranded as Tron Inc. to hold TRX as a treasury asset, and Sun became a major investor in World Liberty Financial, the Trump-linked DeFi project that has its own page on this site.

What people use TRON for

Dollar transfers are the overwhelming use. Merchants in Nigeria, Argentina, Turkey and Vietnam, freelancers paid from abroad, and exchanges moving customer funds all favour TRC-20 USDT because it settles in seconds for almost nothing. For many users TRON is simply the network their dollars live on, and TRX is the small balance they keep to pay for it.

The rest of the ecosystem is modest by comparison. JustLend lends and borrows, SunSwap trades, and the SunPump launchpad brought a memecoin wave in 2024. BitTorrent's token, BTT, runs on TRON and the BitTorrent Chain bridges assets between TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain.

Where to buy and trade TRON

TRX is listed on Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, HTX, Kraken and most other exchanges, with liquid pairs against USDT and the dollar. Coinbase added TRX in 2025 after years of absence. Exchange-traded products tracking TRX exist in Europe, and ETF applications were filed in the United States in 2025.

TronLink is the standard self-custody wallet, and Trust Wallet, Ledger and most multi-chain wallets support the network. When sending USDT, be sure both sides are using the TRON network; sending TRC-20 tokens to an Ethereum address, or the reverse, is one of the most common ways people lose stablecoins.

Risks to understand

TRON's governance is concentrated. A small validator set, a founder with outsized holdings and influence, and a history of regulatory action mean the network carries key-person and legal risk that older proof-of-work chains do not. Its reputation for illicit finance, fair or not, exposes it to enforcement and delisting pressure.

TRX itself has been less volatile than most large tokens, but it depends heavily on Tether's continued use of the chain; a shift of USDT activity elsewhere would remove its main source of demand. This page is a reference for the data above, not investment advice.

TRON FAQ

Who created TRON?

Justin Sun founded TRON in 2017. The mainnet launched in June 2018 and the network is now governed through the TRON DAO, with Sun still its most influential figure.

Does TRX have a maximum supply?

No fixed cap, but TRX has been deflationary since 2021 because the fees burned exceed the block rewards issued.

Why is USDT on TRON so popular?

Transfers settle in about three seconds and cost cents, or nothing if the sender has staked TRX for bandwidth. That makes it the default dollar rail in many emerging markets.

What are bandwidth and energy?

Resources obtained by freezing TRX. Bandwidth covers simple transfers and energy covers smart-contract calls, replacing per-transaction gas fees.

Can I stake TRX?

Yes. Freezing TRX and voting for Super Representatives earns a share of block rewards, typically a few percent a year, through TronLink or an exchange.

TRON is a decentralized blockchain-based operating system designed to accelerate the decentralization of the internet and its underlying infrastructure. It serves as a global settlement layer for stablecoins and everyday digital purchases, providing a high-throughput environment to support large-scale decentralized applications. The network is governed by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), which allows the community to manage the protocol without a central authority. Its primary value proposition includes a unique resource model that utilizes bandwidth and energy to allow for high transaction volumes without traditional fee spikes. The platform functions as a smart contract platform that enables the creation of decentralized applications and is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, allowing developers to easily migrate applications. TRON operates using a Delegated Proof of Stake consensus mechanism where token holders vote for 27 Super Representatives to verify tra
