What is Dogecoin
Dogecoin began as a joke and became the original memecoin. Software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched it on 6 December 2013, pairing the code of an existing Litecoin fork with the face of a Shiba Inu dog from the popular Doge meme. It was meant to poke fun at the altcoin boom; instead a cheerful community adopted it for tipping and charity, and a decade later it ranks among the ten largest crypto assets.
DOGE is the coin's ticker. It is mined, sent and traded like Bitcoin or Litecoin, with no smart contracts and no company behind it. The Dogecoin Foundation, revived in 2021 with Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin among its advisers, funds development; the code is maintained by volunteers. Elon Musk's public enthusiasm from 2019 onward turned Dogecoin from a curiosity into a mainstream asset, and his posts remain its single largest price driver.
How Dogecoin works
Dogecoin is a proof-of-work blockchain using the Scrypt algorithm, the same as Litecoin. Blocks arrive every minute, far faster than Bitcoin's ten, and fees are typically a fraction of a cent, which is what made it practical for tipping small amounts online. Since 2014 it has been merge-mined with Litecoin: miners earn both coins for the same work, which gave Dogecoin a hash rate far larger than its own economics would support and protects it from attack.
The software is a conservative fork of Bitcoin Core's, updated by a small team, and the network has run without a halt since launch. There is no staking, no governance token and no treasury; proposals for changes go through the open-source process on GitHub.
Projects to extend Dogecoin have come and gone. Dogethereum bridges and a proposed proof-of-stake switch were discussed and dropped; current work focuses on libdogecoin, a library for building Dogecoin into apps, GigaWallet for merchants, and the Dogebox node package.
Supply and tokenomics
Dogecoin has no maximum supply. Its creators removed the cap early on, and every block pays a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE, which adds about 5.2 billion coins a year. With roughly 150 billion in circulation that works out to inflation of around 3.5 percent, falling slowly each year as the base grows. The design is intentional: steady issuance keeps miners paid and discourages hoarding, in keeping with the coin's spend-it ethos.
Ownership is concentrated. A small number of addresses, some belonging to exchanges and at least one widely believed to be Robinhood's custody wallet, hold a large share of all DOGE. The coin's price history shows how much a single large buyer or seller, or a single tweet, can move it.
History and milestones
Dogecoin's early community raised money to send the Jamaican bobsled team to the 2014 Winter Olympics and to sponsor a NASCAR driver, which gave the coin a reputation for goodwill. It drifted for years with a price measured in fractions of a cent. Then in early 2021 a Reddit-driven rally, Elon Musk's tweets and his May 2021 appearance on Saturday Night Live sent DOGE to an all-time high near 74 cents, with a market cap above 80 billion dollars.
Tesla began accepting DOGE for merchandise in 2022, and Musk's purchase of Twitter, now X, fuelled speculation about Dogecoin payments that has not materialised. In 2025 the name was borrowed for the US government's Department of Government Efficiency, which Musk led, keeping the coin in headlines. The first US spot Dogecoin exchange-traded fund began trading in September 2025, and several public companies announced Dogecoin treasury strategies the same year.
What people use Dogecoin for
Tipping and small payments were the original use, and merchants that accept crypto through BitPay and similar processors still see DOGE among their most used coins. Tesla, the Dallas Mavericks and a long list of online stores take it directly. Because transactions are fast and cheap, it works for the kind of payment that Bitcoin fees make impractical.
For most holders, though, Dogecoin is a bet on attention. It is the most liquid memecoin, listed everywhere, and tends to lead the memecoin sector in both rallies and sell-offs. Its community, which has outlasted several crypto cycles, treats it as a shared joke and a shared asset at once.
Where to buy and trade Dogecoin
DOGE is listed on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Robinhood, OKX, Bybit and virtually every other exchange, with deep order books against the dollar and major stablecoins. Robinhood's early listing made it one of the first coins many US retail investors ever bought. Spot ETFs in the United States and exchange-traded products in Europe let brokerage accounts hold it.
For self-custody, the Dogecoin Core wallet, MyDoge, Trust Wallet, Exodus and Ledger hardware devices all support DOGE. Be careful with the many copycat tokens named after dogs on other chains; native Dogecoin lives only on its own blockchain, and exchanges list it under the ticker DOGE.
Risks to understand
Dogecoin's price depends on sentiment and celebrity attention more than any asset of its size, and both can vanish. It fell more than 90 percent from its 2021 high and spent years recovering. Unlimited supply means long-term holders are diluted unless demand grows faster than issuance.
Development resources are thin compared with large smart-contract chains, and the coin's security depends on Litecoin's miners continuing to merge-mine it. Scam tokens trading on the Doge name are everywhere. This guide is a reference for the data above, not investment advice.
Dogecoin FAQ
