What is Internet Computer

The Internet Computer is a blockchain designed to run entire applications, front end and back end, without any traditional cloud servers. Most blockchains store balances and small pieces of logic and leave websites, files and databases to Amazon or Google; the Internet Computer's smart contracts, called canisters, serve web pages directly, store gigabytes of data and run computation at a cost close to conventional hosting. The DFINITY Foundation, founded in Zurich by Dominic Williams in 2016, built it and launched the network in May 2021.

ICP is the native token. It is converted into cycles, the fuel that canisters burn to run, staked in the network's governance system to vote and earn rewards, and used to pay the independent node providers who run the hardware. The project calls itself a world computer and has spent years building features other chains do not attempt, which has made it both technically ambitious and hard for outsiders to evaluate.

How the Internet Computer works

The network is made of subnets, each a group of node machines in independent data centres that run the same canisters and reach consensus on their state. Chain-key cryptography lets every subnet produce a single threshold signature, so the whole network has one public key and a phone or browser can verify any response without syncing the chain. Subnets can be added to scale, and canisters on different subnets call each other.

The reverse gas model means users never pay fees. Developers load their canisters with cycles, bought with ICP at a rate pegged to a basket of currencies, and the canister pays for its own computation and storage. Internet Identity provides passwordless login using device biometrics, with no seed phrases.

Chain Fusion connects the network to other chains without bridges: canisters hold Bitcoin and Ethereum keys through threshold signing and can read and write to those chains directly. That produced ckBTC and ckETH, one-to-one representations of bitcoin and ether that move on the Internet Computer at low cost. In 2025 DFINITY launched Caffeine, a service that builds and deploys full applications from natural-language prompts using AI, running them as canisters.

Supply and tokenomics

ICP has no fixed cap. The network mints tokens to reward node providers and governance participants, and burns tokens when they are converted into cycles, so the supply can grow or shrink with usage. Inflation has run at a few percent a year, with voting rewards declining on a schedule toward a long-term floor.

Governance runs through the Network Nervous System, where holders lock ICP in neurons for periods from six months to eight years. Longer locks earn more voting power and higher rewards, and a large share of the supply sits in neurons, much of it from the original allocations to DFINITY, early contributors and seed investors. The launch distribution, in which early backers held tokens at a tiny fraction of the opening price, remains the main criticism of the token.

History and milestones

DFINITY raised more than 160 million dollars from Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain and others before launch. ICP listed in May 2021 at prices above 400 dollars and briefly ranked among the ten largest crypto assets, then fell more than 95 percent over the following year as early holders sold and critics questioned the distribution. The foundation kept building through the drawdown.

Native Bitcoin integration arrived in 2022, ckBTC in 2023 and Ethereum integration in 2024, forming Chain Fusion. The Service Nervous System let applications launch their own DAOs on the network, and apps such as OpenChat, Dscvr and the social platform Hot or Not ran entirely on-chain. In 2025 Caffeine, the AI-driven app builder, became the foundation's flagship product, and the network's node count and data-centre footprint continued to grow across several continents.

What people use the Internet Computer for

Developers use it to host applications that would otherwise need a cloud account: social networks, games, document tools and wallets that serve their own front ends from canisters. The lack of user fees and the Internet Identity login make it suited to consumer apps where asking users to buy gas would kill adoption.

Chain Fusion gives it a role in Bitcoin DeFi, with ckBTC used in lending and trading apps and canisters acting as cross-chain wallets. For ICP holders, staking in neurons is the main use: locking for years earns the highest rewards and gives a say over a network that upgrades itself through on-chain votes.

Where to buy and trade Internet Computer

ICP is listed on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin and most other exchanges against the dollar and major stablecoins. Exchange-traded products tracking ICP are available in Europe.

The NNS front end is the native wallet and staking interface, with Plug, Oisy and Ledger as alternatives. Decentralised exchanges such as ICPSwap and Sonic trade it on-chain. When withdrawing from an exchange, ICP accounts use their own address format, so copy it carefully.

Risks to understand

The Internet Computer is a long bet on a design that no other large project has adopted, and its developer and user numbers remain small relative to its ambition. Node operation is permissioned by the governance system, and DFINITY's voting weight and technical control are substantial. The 2021 launch destroyed trust among early buyers that has never fully returned.
