What is Injective
Injective is a layer-1 blockchain built specifically for finance. Where most chains offer general-purpose smart contracts and leave exchanges to build on top, Injective bakes an order-book exchange, derivatives, oracles and bridging into the protocol itself, so any developer can launch a trading market without writing the matching engine. Eric Chen and Albert Chon founded it in 2018, Binance Labs incubated it, and the mainnet launched in November 2021.
INJ is the native token. It pays fees, is staked to secure the chain, votes in governance, serves as collateral in derivatives markets and is burned in weekly auctions funded by exchange fees. The live price, market cap and supply at the top of this page refresh automatically.
The project positions itself as infrastructure for tokenised stocks, foreign exchange, commodities and pre-IPO shares as much as for crypto pairs, and in 2025 it added a native Ethereum-compatible environment to reach Solidity developers.
How Injective works
Injective is built with the Cosmos SDK and Tendermint proof-of-stake consensus, which gives it sub-second block times and instant finality, and it connects to other Cosmos chains through the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. Its exchange module runs a central limit order book on-chain with frequent batch auctions, a design that settles orders in batches to blunt front-running by bots.
Applications are thin layers over shared modules. Helix, the flagship exchange interface, and dozens of other front-ends all route to the same order books, so liquidity is pooled rather than fragmented across apps. The oracle module pulls prices from Pyth, Chainlink and others, and the bridge connects to Ethereum, Solana and Cosmos assets.
Injective's MultiVM roadmap added CosmWasm contracts first, then a native Ethereum Virtual Machine in 2025 that shares state and liquidity with the rest of the chain, so a Solidity contract can trade on the same order books as a Rust one. iAssets, introduced in 2025, are synthetic versions of stocks, indices and commodities that trade on-chain around the clock.
Supply and tokenomics
INJ launched with 100 million tokens and has dynamic issuance: new INJ is minted to reward stakers at a rate that adjusts with the share of supply staked, originally between five and ten percent a year and tightened in 2024 by the INJ 3.0 upgrade to push the rate down over time. Against that, the protocol holds a burn auction every week in which a basket of fees collected from exchange activity is auctioned for INJ, and the winning INJ is destroyed.
The burn has removed millions of tokens since 2021, and the community's stated aim is for burns to outrun issuance so the supply shrinks. Whether that happens depends on trading volume. Around half of circulating INJ is staked with the chain's validators, and the foundation and early investors hold meaningful allocations that finished vesting in 2024.
History and milestones
Injective began as a decentralised exchange project on Ethereum, raised from Pantera, Jump and Mark Cuban, and launched its own chain in 2021. The 2022 bear market slowed adoption, but 2023 brought a 150 million dollar ecosystem fund, a volume surge on Helix and a rally that took INJ from near one dollar to above fifty by early 2024.
In 2024 the inEVM rollup and the INJ 3.0 tokenomics upgrade arrived, and in 2025 the native EVM went live on the mainnet, iAssets launched with tokenised Nvidia and gold markets, and a listed company, Pineapple Financial, raised 100 million dollars to hold INJ as a treasury asset. US issuers filed for an INJ exchange-traded fund the same year, and Google Cloud and Deutsche Telekom joined the validator set.
What people use Injective for
Trading is the point. Helix offers spot and perpetual markets on crypto, foreign exchange and, through iAssets, equities and commodities with up to 25 times leverage, all settled on-chain with no account. Market makers run strategies against the shared order books, and other front-ends such as Dojo and Mito add vaults and automated strategies on top.
Real-world assets are the growth narrative. Tokenised Treasuries from Ondo, BlackRock's BUIDL exposure through partners and pre-IPO perpetuals on private companies all trade on Injective's rails. For INJ holders, the chain's revenue flows through the burn auction, which is the direct link between activity and the token.
Where to buy and trade Injective
INJ is listed on Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin and most other exchanges against the dollar and major stablecoins. Exchange-traded products tracking INJ exist in Europe, and a US spot ETF application was filed in 2025.
For self-custody, Keplr and Leap support the native chain, MetaMask works with the EVM side, and Ledger devices cover both. Staking is done through the Injective Hub by delegating to a validator; unstaking takes 21 days. Helix is the main venue for on-chain trading.
Risks to understand
Injective competes with Hyperliquid, dYdX and every large exchange for the same traders, and its volumes are far smaller than the leaders'. Its token economics depend on fee revenue that swings with the market, and issuance can outpace burns in quiet periods. Synthetic stock markets face legal uncertainty in most jurisdictions.
INJ fell more than 80 percent from its early-2024 high before recovering, and the 21-day unstaking period means stakers cannot react quickly. This page is a reference for the data above, not investment advice.
Injective FAQ
Who created Injective?
Eric Chen and Albert Chon founded Injective Labs in 2018. Binance Labs incubated the project and the mainnet launched in November 2021.
Does INJ have a maximum supply?
No fixed cap. New INJ is issued to stakers at a rate that adjusts with staking participation, while weekly burn auctions destroy INJ bought with exchange fees.
What is the burn auction?
A weekly auction where a basket of fees from Injective applications is sold for INJ, and the winning INJ is permanently burned. It is the main deflationary mechanism.
Can I trade stocks on Injective?
Yes, through iAssets, synthetic markets that track stocks, indices and commodities and trade around the clock on Helix. They are derivatives, not the underlying shares.
Is Injective compatible with Ethereum?
Since 2025 it runs a native Ethereum Virtual Machine alongside its Cosmos-based modules, so Solidity contracts and MetaMask work on the chain.
