What is Cardano
Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain developed by Input Output Global, the engineering company led by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson. It launched in September 2017 with a stated aim of building on peer-reviewed research and formal methods, an approach that made it slower to ship features than rivals but gave it a reputation for careful engineering.
The native token is ADA, named after the mathematician Ada Lovelace. ADA pays transaction fees, is staked to secure the network and, since 2024, votes on how the treasury is spent and how the protocol changes. Three organisations share responsibility for the ecosystem: Input Output builds the software, the Cardano Foundation in Switzerland handles standards and adoption, and Emurgo focuses on commercial projects.

How Cardano works
Cardano runs Ouroboros, the first proof-of-stake protocol with a published security proof. Time is divided into epochs of five days, each made of slots of one second. Stake pools, run by independent operators, are chosen to produce blocks in proportion to the ADA delegated to them. Delegating does not lock your coins or hand them over; they stay in your wallet and keep earning rewards every epoch.
Cardano uses an extended UTXO model, closer to Bitcoin's accounting than to Ethereum's account model. Each transaction consumes inputs and creates outputs, and smart contracts, written in Plutus, a Haskell-based language, validate whether an output may be spent. Developers can also use Aiken, a newer purpose-built language. The design makes transaction outcomes predictable before they are sent, at the cost of a steeper learning curve.
Scaling happens through Hydra, a layer-2 protocol that opens fast off-chain channels, and through partner chains such as Midnight, a privacy-focused network that uses ADA holders for security. Mithril provides fast, certified snapshots so new nodes can sync without replaying the whole history.
Supply and tokenomics
ADA has a hard cap of 45 billion tokens. Roughly 31 billion were sold or allocated at launch, and the remaining reserve is released gradually as staking rewards, with the share paid out each epoch shrinking as the reserve depletes. A portion of every block's rewards and fees also flows into a treasury that funds development through the Project Catalyst voting programme.
Staking participation is high: around 60 percent of circulating ADA is delegated to roughly three thousand stake pools. Rewards are paid automatically every five days without lock-ups or slashing, which keeps the delegated supply sticky. The live circulating supply above reflects reserve releases and treasury movements.
History and milestones
Cardano's roadmap is divided into named eras. Byron delivered the first federated network in 2017. Shelley brought decentralised staking in July 2020. Goguen added native tokens in early 2021 and smart contracts with the Alonzo hard fork in September 2021, which was when DeFi and NFTs arrived on the chain. Basho focused on scaling, and Voltaire, the governance era, began with the Chang hard fork in September 2024.
Under Voltaire, ADA holders elect delegated representatives, a constitutional committee reviews proposals, and the community ratified a written constitution in early 2025. The treasury, holding well over a billion ADA, is now spent only through on-chain votes. Earlier controversies, including a 2021 African identity partnership that produced less than promised, taught the ecosystem to be more conservative with announcements.
Where to buy and trade Cardano
ADA is listed on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX, Bybit and almost every regulated exchange, with pairs against the dollar, euro and major stablecoins. Several exchange-traded products in Europe track ADA, and US issuers have filed for spot ADA funds following the bitcoin and ether approvals.
For self-custody, Lace is Input Output's own wallet, and Eternl, Yoroi and Vespr are widely used alternatives, all with staking built in. Native decentralised exchanges such as Minswap and SundaeSwap handle on-chain swaps. Because staking never locks coins, most long-term holders keep ADA in a delegating wallet rather than on an exchange.
What people use Cardano for
Cardano's DeFi layer is smaller than Ethereum's but active. Minswap and SundaeSwap handle swaps, Liqwid and Lenfi offer lending, and the Djed and USDM stablecoins provide dollar liquidity on-chain. Native tokens are issued without smart contracts, which keeps fees for minting and sending assets low and predictable, and the NFT market, led by jpg.store, has been one of the chain's steadiest sources of activity.
Real-world projects include supply-chain tracking with the Cardano Foundation's partners, educational credentials in Ethiopia and Georgia, and government pilots in several countries. Project Catalyst, the community treasury, has funded more than a thousand small grants chosen by ADA holder votes, and the Midnight partner chain aims to bring privacy-preserving contracts to enterprises that cannot put data on a public ledger.
Risks to understand
Cardano's deliberate pace means features often ship years after competitors, and its DeFi ecosystem remains far smaller than Ethereum's or Solana's in locked value and daily users. ADA's price has historically been driven by sentiment and announcements more than by on-chain revenue. The token fell more than 90 percent from its 2021 peak before recovering.
Governance is new, and large treasury decisions are now made by vote, which introduces political risk. As with any crypto asset, exchange failures, wallet phishing and sharp drawdowns are real possibilities. This page is a reference for the data above, not investment advice.
Cardano FAQ
Who created Cardano?
Charles Hoskinson, a co-founder of Ethereum, founded Input Output in 2015 to build Cardano. The network launched in September 2017.
What is the maximum supply of ADA?
45 billion ADA. The remaining reserve is paid out as staking rewards over many years, so the circulating supply rises slowly toward the cap.
Does staking ADA lock my coins?
No. Delegating to a stake pool keeps the ADA in your wallet, with no lock-up and no slashing. Rewards arrive every five-day epoch.
When did Cardano get smart contracts?
With the Alonzo hard fork in September 2021. Contracts are written in Plutus or Aiken and use an extended UTXO model.
What is the Chang hard fork?
The September 2024 upgrade that started on-chain governance. ADA holders and their elected representatives now vote on treasury spending and protocol changes.
