What is Avalanche

Avalanche is a smart-contract platform built by Ava Labs and launched in September 2020. Its founder, Emin Gün Sirer, is a Cornell computer science professor who had worked on peer-to-peer systems and consensus research for two decades before the project. Avalanche's pitch is fast finality, full compatibility with Ethereum tooling and the ability for any organisation to launch its own blockchain, originally called a subnet and now branded an Avalanche L1.

The native token is AVAX. It pays fees on the primary network, is staked by validators and delegators, and is required to launch and run custom L1s. The live price, market cap and supply figures at the top of this page refresh automatically.

Ava Labs is based in New York and raised funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain and others. The Avalanche Foundation holds and distributes a large part of the token supply through grants and incentive programmes.

How Avalanche works

The primary network has three chains. The C-Chain runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so MetaMask, Solidity and every Ethereum tool work unchanged; this is where DeFi and most user activity lives. The P-Chain coordinates validators and custom L1s. The X-Chain handles simple asset transfers. All three are secured by the same validator set.

Consensus is the Snowman protocol, part of the Avalanche family introduced in a 2018 paper. Instead of every validator talking to every other validator, each node repeatedly samples a small random group and adopts the majority view, which converges on agreement within a couple of seconds. Transactions reach finality in under two seconds, and there is no concept of block reorganisation.

Custom L1s are Avalanche's main differentiator. A company can launch its own chain with its own rules, gas token and validator requirements, including permissioned chains for regulated institutions, while still interoperating with the rest of the network. The Avalanche9000 upgrade in December 2024 cut the cost of launching an L1 from a 2,000 AVAX stake per validator to a small ongoing fee, which triggered a wave of new chains from gaming studios and financial firms.

Supply and tokenomics

AVAX has a hard cap of 720 million tokens. Half were minted at launch and allocated to the public sale, team, foundation and partners; the other half is released over time as staking rewards. Every transaction fee on the primary network is burned, so heavy usage reduces the supply that would otherwise grow through staking.

Validators must stake at least 2,000 AVAX and delegators can join with as little as 25. Staked tokens are locked for a chosen period between two weeks and a year, and there is no slashing; validators that go offline simply forfeit rewards. Around half of circulating AVAX is staked. Vesting schedules for early investors and the team ran for several years after launch and are now largely complete.

History and milestones

Avalanche grew fast in 2021 on the back of a 180 million dollar liquidity incentive programme called Avalanche Rush, which brought Aave, Curve and SushiSwap to the C-Chain. AVAX reached an all-time high near 145 dollars in November 2021. Trader Joe became the network's flagship decentralised exchange and the Benqi protocol its main lending market.

The 2022 bear market and a dispute over an alleged litigation campaign, which Ava Labs denied, hurt sentiment. Recovery came through institutional work: Avalanche Evergreen subnets for banks, tokenised funds from Franklin Templeton and others, a partnership with Amazon Web Services, and deals with Deloitte, Citi and JPMorgan on pilot projects. Gaming chains such as Off The Grid's GUNZ and the DeFi Kingdoms chain run as Avalanche L1s. In 2025 US issuers filed for spot AVAX exchange-traded funds.

Where to buy and trade Avalanche

AVAX trades on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX, Bybit and most other large exchanges against the dollar, euro and major stablecoins. Exchange-traded products tracking AVAX are available in Europe, and spot ETF applications are pending in the United States.

On-chain, AVAX is the gas token on the C-Chain, so a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask, Core (Ava Labs' own wallet) or Rabby is all you need. Trader Joe, Pharaoh and Uniswap's Avalanche deployment handle swaps, and Core's built-in bridge moves assets from Ethereum and Bitcoin. When withdrawing from an exchange, pick the C-Chain network; sending to the X-Chain address format is a common mistake.

What people use Avalanche for

DeFi on the C-Chain is the most visible use: Trader Joe and Pharaoh for swaps, Benqi and Aave for lending, GMX for perpetual futures. Stablecoin transfers in USDC and USDT are large and cheap, and Avalanche is one of the chains Circle supports natively for USDC minting.

The custom L1 model draws a different crowd. Gaming studios run their own chains to avoid congestion, as with Off The Grid's GUNZ network, which at times processed more transactions than the primary network. Financial institutions test tokenised funds, private settlement and on-chain foreign exchange on permissioned Avalanche L1s, with Franklin Templeton, Citi, JPMorgan and Deloitte among the names that have run pilots. Those enterprise chains pay fees in AVAX, which is the link between institutional adoption and the token.

Risks to understand

Avalanche competes directly with Ethereum's layer-2 networks, Solana and other EVM chains for the same developers, and activity on the C-Chain has swung widely with incentive programmes. The custom L1 strategy depends on enterprises actually launching and using chains, which has moved more slowly than announcements suggested.

AVAX is volatile and fell more than 90 percent from its 2021 peak before recovering. Staking lock-ups mean you cannot exit quickly during a sell-off. As always, exchange risk, wallet phishing and regulatory changes apply. This guide is a reference for the data above, not investment advice.

Avalanche FAQ

Who created Avalanche?

Emin Gün Sirer, a Cornell professor, founded Ava Labs with Kevin Sekniqi and Maofan Yin. The mainnet launched in September 2020.

What is the maximum supply of AVAX?

720 million. Half was minted at launch and the rest is released as staking rewards. All transaction fees on the primary network are burned.

What is an Avalanche L1?

A custom blockchain, formerly called a subnet, that any organisation can launch with its own rules and token while staying connected to the Avalanche network. The Avalanche9000 upgrade in December 2024 made launching one far cheaper.

Is Avalanche compatible with Ethereum?

Yes. The C-Chain runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so MetaMask, Solidity contracts and Ethereum tools work without changes.

Can I stake AVAX?

Yes. Validators stake at least 2,000 AVAX and delegators from 25 AVAX, locked for two weeks to a year. There is no slashing.
