What is Arbitrum
Arbitrum is a layer-2 network that makes Ethereum cheaper and faster while inheriting its security. It bundles thousands of transactions, executes them off the main chain and posts the results back to Ethereum, so users pay a fraction of mainnet fees for the same contracts and assets. Offchain Labs, founded by Princeton computer scientists Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner, launched Arbitrum One in August 2021, and for years it held more value than any other layer-2 network.
ARB is the governance token, distributed in a large airdrop in March 2023. It does not pay gas, which is paid in ether, and it does not earn fees directly; it gives holders control over the Arbitrum DAO, which owns the protocol, its treasury and the sequencer revenue. The live price, market cap and supply at the top of this page refresh automatically.
The Arbitrum Foundation administers grants and partnerships on the DAO's behalf, and Offchain Labs remains the main developer.
How Arbitrum works
Arbitrum One is an optimistic rollup. A sequencer orders transactions and posts compressed batches to Ethereum, where they are assumed valid unless someone proves otherwise within a challenge window of about a week. If a validator submits a fraudulent state, anyone can dispute it through an interactive proof that Ethereum resolves. Withdrawals to Ethereum therefore take a week unless a third-party bridge fronts the funds.
The Nitro upgrade in 2022 rebuilt the stack around a compiled version of the standard Ethereum client, improving speed and compatibility, and Stylus in 2024 let developers write contracts in Rust, C and C++ alongside Solidity. BoLD, activated in February 2025, made validation permissionless so anyone can challenge the chain's state, removing one of the last trusted roles.
Arbitrum Nova is a separate chain for games and social apps that uses a data-availability committee for lower costs, and Arbitrum Orbit lets anyone launch their own chain on the same technology, settling to Arbitrum One or directly to Ethereum. Timeboost, introduced in 2025, auctions the right to transact first in each block and sends the proceeds to the DAO.
Supply and tokenomics
ARB has a total supply of ten billion tokens. The DAO treasury received about 43 percent, investors and the Offchain Labs team around 44 percent with four-year vesting, and users and ecosystem projects received the rest through the 2023 airdrop. Governance can vote to mint up to two percent more per year but has not done so.
The token's value depends on what the DAO does with its treasury and its revenue. Sequencer fees, which exceed the cost of posting data to Ethereum, accrue to the DAO, and Timeboost adds auction income. Proposals to stake ARB and share revenue have been debated for years; a staking framework was approved in 2025 but revenue distribution to stakers remained a governance question. Monthly investor and team unlocks continued through 2027.
History and milestones
Arbitrum One opened to the public in August 2021 and drew DeFi protocols such as GMX, Uniswap and Aave with lower fees and full compatibility. Its locked value passed every other layer-2 network and, during 2022 and 2023, it became the home of on-chain perpetual trading. The March 2023 airdrop distributed more than a billion ARB and immediately drew criticism when the foundation moved 750 million tokens before a ratification vote; the DAO imposed new controls in response.
Stylus, Orbit chains and the Arbitrum Gaming Catalyst programme marked 2024, and BoLD and Timeboost shipped in 2025. Robinhood chose Orbit to build its own chain for tokenised stocks in 2025, one of several large consumer companies to do so. Base, Coinbase's layer-2 network, overtook Arbitrum in daily activity during 2024, and the two have competed for the lead in total value since.
What people use Arbitrum for
DeFi is the heart of it. GMX and other perpetual exchanges, Uniswap, Aave, Camelot, Pendle and Radiant run on Arbitrum One, and traders use the network for lower-cost versions of Ethereum strategies. Hyperliquid's bridge sits on Arbitrum, so much of the capital flowing into the largest on-chain perpetuals venue passes through it.
Orbit chains extend the reach: game studios, Robinhood's tokenisation chain and specialised DeFi networks settle to Arbitrum. For ARB holders, the token's use is governance over a treasury worth billions of dollars and over the protocol's revenue, with staking under construction.
Where to buy and trade Arbitrum
ARB is listed on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin and most other exchanges against the dollar and major stablecoins. Exchange-traded products tracking ARB exist in Europe.
On-chain, ARB trades on Uniswap and Camelot on Arbitrum One, where fees are cents. MetaMask, Rabby and hardware wallets hold it. Most exchanges support direct withdrawals to the Arbitrum network, which avoids the mainnet bridge; the official bridge takes about a week to withdraw back to Ethereum.
Risks to understand
Layer-2 tokens have struggled to capture value: gas is paid in ether, revenue goes to a treasury, and ARB holders have waited years for a direct claim on it. Competition from Base, Optimism's Superchain and zero-knowledge rollups is intense, and Ethereum's own upgrades change the economics of rollups with each release.
Investor and team unlocks add supply every month, and ARB fell more than 80 percent from its 2024 high. The sequencer is still run by Offchain Labs, a centralisation point. This page is a reference for the data above, not investment advice.
Arbitrum FAQ
Who created Arbitrum?
Offchain Labs, founded by Princeton professor Ed Felten with Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner. Arbitrum One launched in August 2021 and the Arbitrum DAO has governed it since March 2023.
What is the total supply of ARB?
Ten billion tokens, with about 43 percent held by the DAO treasury and the rest split among investors, the team, users and ecosystem projects. Vesting runs through 2027.
Do I pay gas in ARB?
No. Gas on Arbitrum is paid in ether. ARB is used for governance of the DAO and its treasury.
Why do withdrawals take a week?
Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup with a challenge window during which fraudulent states can be disputed. Third-party bridges offer faster withdrawals for a fee.
What is Arbitrum Orbit?
A framework that lets anyone launch their own chain using Arbitrum's technology, settling to Arbitrum One or to Ethereum. Robinhood and several game studios have built Orbit chains.
